The mutation index
Every mutation is a new constraint. Learn its tell, respect its timing, and make the board work for you before it works against you.
Playable
After your 6th move, one pawn on the affected side is armed. It explodes if captured or after 10 more moves. Its 3×3 blast removes every piece it catches. The blast does not chain. A king caught in the blast loses, and both kings caught means a draw.

At match start, the affected side’s original queen can move or capture only up to 2 squares in a straight line or diagonal. It cannot attack or give check farther away. The limit lasts for the whole match; promoted queens are unaffected.

After your 6th move, two empty squares become sacred. The affected side can pass through them but cannot land on or capture on them. The other side uses them normally.

After your 6th completed player move, up to two eligible bishops or knights change type permanently.

At match start, one rook is missing from the affected side. The missing rook never returns.

LegendaryAfter your 10th move and every 10 moves after that, the affected side receives a pawn in its own half. A safe empty square is preferred; if none is safe, any valid empty square is used. If none exists, no pawn appears. New pawns cannot move two squares on their first move.

After every 8 moves, the side that should reply misses one turn. This happens even if that side is in check, and the mover keeps the initiative.

After your 10th move, one pawn on the affected side changes to the other color. It then moves as that color’s pawn and cannot move two squares on its first move. If no pawn can change safely, it waits until one is available.

At match start, the affected original queen is locked for completed player moves 1–15 and unlocks before move 16.

After every 10 moves, one pawn on the affected side disappears. If no safe pawn is available, it waits until one is.

LegendaryAfter your 6th move, up to five empty squares become mines. A piece dies when it lands on a mine. The mine is used up and causes no splash damage.

LegendaryAfter your 10th move, the king and original queen on the affected side try to swap places. If the swap is not safe, it waits and tries again after later moves. A successful swap uses no turn. The check repeats every 10 moves.

LegendaryAfter your 10th move, you and the enemy switch control once. You control the enemy’s color, and they control yours. Pieces keep their colors, squares, and identities.

EpicAfter your 6th move, the affected side sees its own half and explored squares. Enemy pieces in unexplored squares stay hidden for the rest of the match. Legal moves, captures, and check warnings remain available.

EpicAfter every 7 moves, a warning marks a square. It erupts after 3 more moves, removes any piece there, and leaves lava that destroys pieces landing there later. The next warning waits until the current one erupts.

EpicAfter every 8 moves, a rank or file charges for 2 moves, then removes every piece on that line. The cycle repeats every 8 moves. Only the side allowed to see it sees the line and countdown.

LegendaryAfter your 6th move: Up to two pawns on the affected side arm. Every 3 moves, each surviving armed pawn removes the first occupied piece straight ahead in its file. An empty file misses; survivors fire again later.

EpicAt match start, the affected side loses its knights and bishops. After each move 3 through 10: Up to two pawns appear on safe empty squares near its king. Up to 16 pawns appear total; a wave may create fewer or none. New pawns cannot move two squares on their first move.

After your 6th move, one non-king piece on the affected side freezes for the rest of the match. It cannot move, capture, attack, defend, or give check. It remains on the board and blocks lines; normal moves cannot capture it.
